Introducing the E-Cross / MAX: a new approach to bulky parcel sorting
Yet one process has largely remained untouched: the handling of
bulky and oversized parcels.
Across Europe, almost every parcel operator runs a separate process
for items that exceed the dimensions of conventional parcel sorting systems.
Parcels longer than 1,200mm are often classified as non-conveyable and diverted
into dedicated manual handling areas. While volumes are relatively modest, the
process is labour intensive, expensive and increasingly difficult to staff.
To address this challenge, EAE Solutions has developed the E-Cross /
MAX, a new crossbelt sorter specifically designed for the automated sorting of
bulky and oversized parcels. The system will be officially introduced to the
CEP market during Parcel+Post Expo 2026 in London.
Built
specifically for oversized parcels
The E-Cross / MAX is not a conventional parcel sorter adapted for
larger items. It has been developed from the ground up to process parcels that
are traditionally considered difficult or impossible to automate.
The system can handle parcels ranging from 150mm up to 2,600mm in
length and is available in widths of 800mm, 1,000mm and 1,200mm. For bulky
parcel operations with average parcel lengths of approximately 1,600mm, the
sorter achieves operational capacities exceeding 2,000 parcels per hour. Powered
by energy-efficient Linear Synchronous Motors (LSM) and controlled by the
proven EAE Flow.Control platform, the E-Cross / MAX combines precise parcel
tracking with intelligent destination management and low energy consumption.
The result is a compact and cost-effective solution that can be
integrated into both existing and new parcel facilities.
Solving
a long-standing industry challenge
Traditional sorting systems rely on physical chutes. For bulky
parcels, this creates a significant limitation. Large items require wide
discharge lanes, reducing the number of destinations that can be installed
within a given footprint.
At the same time, chute capacity decreases because only a limited
number of oversized parcels can accumulate before a chute reaches capacity.
Once full, parcels are typically diverted to overflow locations, creating
additional handling steps and reducing operational efficiency.
The E-Cross / MAX takes a fundamentally different approach. Instead
of sorting parcels to fixed physical chutes, the system sorts to virtual
destinations within designated sorting regions. Advanced software continuously
monitors available capacity within each region and dynamically allocates
parcels to the most suitable discharge position. This allows operators to
create significantly more destinations within the same footprint while
simultaneously increasing accumulation capacity for oversized parcels.
Intelligent
sorting with virtual destinations
The concept of virtual destinations forms the heart of the E-Cross /
MAX. When a destination reaches its preferred capacity, the system
automatically directs incoming parcels to a neighbouring virtual location
within the same region. Operators remain close to their assigned destination
and only need to walk minimal distances when placing parcels into roll
containers or pallets.
